Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument©
This is one of my top three tools that I use with almost every coaching client. It’s extremely useful in helping them understand their style when it comes to conflict. Devised by Kenneth W Thomas and Ralph H Kilmann, it’s a very quick assessment (only 30 questions) which can be completed on-line through the Oxford Psychology Press (OPP).
What it measures:
The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument© has five conflict-handling modes
Competing
the goal is ‘to win’
Avoiding
the goal is ‘to delay’
Compromising:
the goal is ‘to find a middle ground’
Collaborating
the goal is ‘to find a win-win solution’
Accommodating
the goal is ‘to yield’
The instrument’s non-evaluative approach helps individuals to understand how often you use each of the five conflict-handling modes. You will learn about the most appropriate uses for each mode and how to increase your ‘comfort-level’ for less-used styles.
Conflict is a natural and expected part of all our interactions with others. There is no right way or wrong way to handle conflict. Each situation is different and we need to adjust our conflict handling style when appropriate. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument© helps individuals to appreciate the different ways to handle conflict and understand their own personal conflict handling style.
Once able to analyse a situation and apply the appropriate conflict-handling ‘mode’, individuals are able to resolve matters positively and productively.
Applications and Benefits:
