Saving the world from Mediocre Leadership

Saving the world from Mediocre Leadership

Saving the world from Mediocre coffee – that was the slogan on the side of the Costa Coffee van that I passed on the motorway, which got me thinking about mediocre leadership…

Most managers don’t possess the skills and abilities to be great leaders when they first start out. Some never develop these talents, but of those that do, it’s because they want to be a better leader. They find ways to develop themselves and their teams. They develop their emotional intelligence and expand their thinking, so that they don’t get stuck with outdated behaviours and attitudes.
Mediocre leadership

Be true, stand out from the crowd, don't be mediocre

mediocre.

me¬∑di¬∑o¬∑cre (md-kr) Me”di*o`cre

An English dictionary definition of a mediocre person: Average, or below average in quality, ability or achievement. Someone who lacks any special skill or flair.

I have come across many people who feel that if they want to progress up the corporate ladder they must take responsibility for a team of people. They may not have the ability to guide and lead a team of individuals, but due to the structure in their organisation, they find that they have no choice if they want the promotion and the increased package that goes with that next level.

If you don’t want to be a mediocre leader, ask yourself;

  1. Are you excited by the prospect of leading a team?
  2. Are you open to feedback?
  3. Are you willing to look at ideas / suggestions from others point of view?
  4. Are you interested in other people development?
  5. Are you happy to take a back seat and allow others to drive projects?
  6. Are you able to focus on the outcome more than the problem?
  7. Are you a good role model? Do people look to you?

If you can’t answer ‘yes’ to these questions, what needs to change in order for you to be the best leader that you can be?
