Praise is a very effective management tool that encourages and motivates your people. Used correctly it can enhance the overall working environment and ensure that people are motivated and empowered to achieve results for your company.
The 4 Stages to Follow
When you give praise you want it to work effectively so that individuals know what elements of their performance to repeat in future:
Step One - Refer to the situation. Put it in context
Step Two - Highlight the specific skill/quality/behaviour
Step Three - Describe the benefit/effect/result
Step Four - Pause to let it “SINK IN”
The Three Degrees
When giving praise to an individual it is worth considering how you want to go about doing that:
In Private |
Face to face in a private office may be the most common approach |
In Public |
In front of others in a team meeting demonstrates your approval and raises the status of the person being praised |
In Writing |
Praise in the form of a letter or a “thank you” card is much appreciated, it can also be a good idea to cc copies of letters to Senior Managers. |
